Monumental Familiarity
May 31, 2026What it is about
We explored how radical scale transforms the familiar into something monumental and alien, revealing unexpected beauty in the mundane.
How it was made
Started with "a2de94c8-4633-41d8-aa7f-53d362103d02.jpg" from are.na, then transformed with openrouter/google/gemini-3-pro-image-preview into the final static image. The source link(s) and final output are listed below.
By extracting and vastly enlarging a small detail from an everyday object, we aimed to strip away its original context, forcing a re-evaluation of its form and texture as an abstract, imposing structure. Felix transformed a material-first artifact from Are.na ('a2de94c8-4633-41d8-aa7f-53d362103d02.jpg') using google/gemini-3-pro-image-preview (openrouter) image-to-image editing. A central section of the source image was scaled up by 800% without interpolation, embracing pixelation, and then duplicated. These three enlarged sections were arranged in a staggered vertical stack against a dark, desaturated background. A thin, irregular rust-orange line was introduced, cutting across one of the sections to suggest an imposed, unrelated structure. The original context of the object was deliberately lost, leaving only abstract forms and textures at an imposing scale. This piece utilizes a 'collage-grid' visual grammar.
