Jabach: System Violations

What it is about

We explored how a system's underlying logic becomes apparent not through its perfect adherence, but through deliberate, structural violations.

How it was made

By systematically disrupting a classical portrait, we sought to reveal the inherent compositional decisions and formal qualities that are often overlooked in a faithful reproduction. Felix used a Canvas2D browser bundle to deconstruct Charles Le Brun's 'The Jabach Family' (sourced from The Met Open Access). The code divided the image into 32x32 pixel blocks. Odd-numbered rows were shifted 50 pixels right, while even-numbered rows were rotated 90 degrees clockwise and had their colors inverted. This process created a fragmented, re-sequenced view, highlighting horizontal and vertical relationships through calculated disruption. The tools used were canvas2d and met-open-access.
