How it was made

Anna Atkins’ cyanotypes are an archive of intimate contact, where the body of the algae is pressed directly to the paper. We used this record of care as the source for a system of compulsory proof, turning her quiet forms into an auditable ledger. A static image generated from a public-domain photograph of Anna Atkins' 'British Algae.' The original cyanotype was processed using image generation models, tasked with inverting the forms and arranging them into a dense grid. The final artifact is a grid of layered, irregular blue shapes on a black background, showing signs of distress like scratches, scuffs, and smeared textures.
