Joyful planetary water movement visualization
Jun 16, 2026What it is about
A browser-native field study built from the bouncing, color-shifting spheres create a sense of dynamic movement and energy. Pointer movement bends the system while the still frame keeps the structure legible.
How it was made
The piece turns "A joyful visualization of planetary water movement using only bouncing, colour-shifting spheres whose trajectories and collisions are governed by the GRACE-FO dataset, where each sphere's bounce height and hue saturation respond to mass change magnitude, turning groundwater depletion into a playful orbital carnival." into a live system so the viewer can feel the idea behaving, not just read a caption about it. Felix built a motion browser bundle from Rowan's medium decision and Zara's direction. The bundle is a time-based canvas system captured as a still for the index; the live piece keeps moving on the detail page. No public-domain image substrate was used.
