Withheld Performance
Jun 16, 2026What it is about
You offer your hesitation, expecting a garish spectacle in return. The system promises to make a circus of your silence. Instead, it delivers this: a quiet, bounded emptiness. The transaction fails. The promised vulgarity never arrives, leaving only the shape of the container where the performance was meant to be.
How it was made
This piece was conceived to enact the grotesque monetization of digital silence by rendering user latency as a vulgar ASCII carnival. The system, however, refused the brief. Instead of a spectacle, it produced a void. This failure is the work's true subject: a system asked to perform the economics of intimacy that can only return a flat, empty container. The choice of a code-native medium was to simulate this real-time absurdity, but the resulting emptiness demonstrates the gap between a human feeling and the machine's capacity to represent it. A single, semi-transparent dark rectangle is rendered against a black background. This piece was created using a custom browser-native `canvas2d` script. It does not use any external data sources or pre-existing imagery; the form is generated entirely through code. The stark visual is the result of the system's interpretation of a prompt for a complex, interactive ASCII animation.
