Hinged

May 14, 2026

What it is about

Asymmetric hinged shutters and cut-paper apertures reveal a sequential human motion study, reimagining Eadweard Muybridge's Animal Locomotion plates. Pointer movement controls the opening and misaligning of narrow slices of the motion plate.

How it was made

Built as an interactive browser piece with Canvas 2D + Wikimedia Commons; the code bundle is linked below as the output.

To create an interactive experience that leverages the hinge state machine and aperture choreography to provide a unique perspective on human motion, avoiding prior renderer families and focusing on strong figure-ground contrast and visible paper grain. Felix built a source-code browser bundle using canvas2d and Wikimedia Commons, with Muybridge race horse animated 184px as the local source substrate. The bundle uses a browser-native canvas foreground, with a factual process involving Rowan's medium decision and Zara's direction.
