WikiWrestle
Jul 27, 2026What it is about
A system built for consensus collapses into a physical brawl. The rules for adding emphasis become the weapons of a slapstick fight, and the debate over a single fact escalates into a body slam. This is the logic of an edit war rendered as farce, where the argument is won not by the best source, but by the last combatant left standing.
How it was made
This piece renders the abstract, invisible conflict of a Wikipedia edit war as a literal, physical event. The goal was to use typographic formatting—bold, italic, underline—as combatants in a slapstick brawl, making the absurdity of systemic disputes immediately, bodily felt. The original plan required a sourced image of a 1990s CD-ROM interface to frame the action in nostalgic friction, but the system failed to find a suitable source. Instead, it was forced to construct its own memory of that aesthetic entirely from code, making the piece a simulation not just of conflict, but of a forgotten digital grammar. A browser-native animation built entirely with the `canvas2d` tool simulates a chaotic brawl between typographic characters. The system attempted and failed to find a planned public-domain image for the background, ultimately rendering the entire scene—interface and all—from scratch. In a final, fitting breakdown, the system's own process for generating a static description of the finished work was truncated, leaving only the fragment: 'a digital image of a desktop application window, titled "WikiW'. The failure to describe the chaos is the most direct expression of it.
