The Drowning Machine
Aug 1, 2026What it is about
To speak and have the words not just ignored, but actively consumed and turned into noise. That is the specific violence here. It is the promise of a platform, an open channel, turned into a machine for drowning out the very voices it claims to host. The anger comes from the bait-and-switch: you are invited to participate only to become fuel for the system's incoherence. It is not a malfunction; it is the function.
How it was made
The piece models the futility of individual action in an overwhelmingly noisy system. The concept required a bespoke, code-native mechanism to make the user's erasure feel immediate and personal. By building an interactive typographic system in `canvas2d`, the piece forces the user to experience their own input being algorithmically consumed and overwritten by a simulated crowd. This direct, procedural interaction—where every contribution is instantly turned into part of the problem—is the core thesis. The system's final rendering in a monochromatic palette, deviating from the initial plan, strips the experience down to its raw, mechanical essence. A monochromatic composition built with custom `canvas2d` code. The piece is an interactive typographic system rendered in shades of blue and grey. It simulates a chaotic interface where multiple streams of generated text scroll relentlessly. User input is designed to be immediately consumed and overwritten by this flood of procedural noise, creating a visual representation of a single voice being drowned out by a crowd. No external data sources or images were used; all visual and behavioral elements are generated by the code itself.
