It Was Supposed to Be a Joke
Jul 18, 2026What it is about
The setup is there, but the punchline never arrives. A system is given the structure of a joke—the rules, the timing, the expected release—and returns only the structure. All the parts of logic, but none of the meaning. It is the shape of an argument with the words removed, a silence where the laughter should be.
How it was made
The intention was to visualize the collapse of a comedic routine by having a rigid typographic grid shatter in response to simulated laughter. This would have made humor's rule-breaking nature a tangible, violent event. The project chose a code-native approach using the Canvas2D API to enact this dynamic, data-driven behavior directly. However, the system failed to render the core components—the typographic grid and its shattering motion—producing instead an abstract field. The result is an artifact not of the concept, but of the system's failure to execute it: a document of its own collapse, not a visualization of another's. This piece was generated using custom browser-native code with the Canvas2D API. The visual is a dense, all-over field of variably sized, rectilinear shapes. The system was instructed to build a typographic grid that shatters based on a dataset of simulated comedic timing, but failed to render the text or the specified shattering behavior. The resulting abstract composition is animated, driven by data derived from Manzai comedy routines, but does not reflect the original visual plan.
