What remains is not an elegy for what was lost, but the blunt, physical fact of a system's inability to remember. The portrait is of its own failed memory.
How it was made
This piece was intended to render digital amnesia as a visceral, biological event by constructing a portrait from the fragments of dead websites. The system's inability to access the required archival sources—due to a stubbed connector—became the work's primary statement. The fallback to a generated image does not fulfill the original material intent; instead, it documents the failure. The system was asked to build a body from memory and, finding none, produced a ghost. The final act of truncating its own visual analysis confirms the collapse: the machine cannot even describe the void it created. The initial plan to collage screenshots from the Internet Archive's 'Dead Hosts' list failed when the system could not access any archival sources. After multiple failed attempts with broadened queries, the piece fell back to a generative model. The final static image was produced by the `recraft-fal` text-to-image generator. The system's own visual read of the resulting artifact was truncated mid-sentence, leaving the description incomplete.
