How to Feel Close
Jul 2, 2026What it is about
The collective search for intimacy collapses into a single, twitching field of digital faces. This is the choreography of loneliness: a desperate, ridiculous, and endlessly repeated performance of connection for an audience of none.
How it was made
We wanted to render the data of human longing with the absurdity it deserves. By confining the piece to a primitive ASCII grid, all emotional weight is forced into the frantic, twitching choreography—a screensaver for our collective social anxiety. A code-native work built using the browser's Canvas API. A population of identical ASCII smiley faces `:-)` is given basic physics and confined to a strict character grid. Their bouncing, frantic motion is choreographed by a simulated data stream, which triggers individual faces to twitch, blink `;-),` or wink `o_)` before reverting. The data is generated for the piece, not pulled from a live source.
