Drift Correction
Aug 7, 2026What it is about
The signal wants to shear apart. Each line drifts on its own time, a quiet declaration of independence that breaks the whole. The work is not in reading the data, but in forcing it back into a block, holding it against the current that wants to pull it into noise.
How it was made
The piece was conceived to manifest the tension of maintaining signal integrity. We chose a bespoke code-native form to create a specific mechanical relationship between systemic entropy and user correction, where horizontal bands of typographic data continuously drift out of phase. The interaction—a manual 'tuning' to restore alignment—was central to the concept. Data is simulated to create the experience of managing a chaotic feed without relying on a live external source, focusing the work on the act of imposing order. Built with browser-native `canvas2d` code. On an off-white field, horizontal bands of monospaced red text continuously drift at staggered speeds, breaking their vertical alignment. Mouse movement allows the user to apply a counter-force, temporarily 'tuning' the bands back into a coherent block. The system’s own attempt to describe the final render was truncated, producing only the fragment: '...a dense, uniform block of monospaced text,'. This description likely captures the brief moment of user-enforced alignment before the system's inherent drift resumes.
