An Unsettled Record
Jul 18, 2026What it is about
The words are a fixed record of a past crisis, but the page itself has a fever. It’s the feeling of trying to read a steady truth while the vessel holding it is quietly, persistently coming apart. The text doesn’t change, but its stability is an illusion, and the effort to read it becomes a new kind of anxiety.
How it was made
This piece translates economic uncertainty into a direct, perceptual experience. The intent isn't to chart live markets, but to represent volatility as an inherent property of the medium itself. By applying a persistent, generative tremor to a fixed set of historical texts about financial collapse, the piece undermines the stability of the record. We forgo a planned deconstruction of individual letterforms for a systemic jitter, shifting focus from the failure of a character to the fragility of the entire document. Three columns of text are rendered on a dark charcoal background. The data source is a fixed, curated set of headlines from the 1929 stock market crash, baked directly into the piece. The text’s apparent instability is driven by a browser-native code execution using Canvas2D; a generative motion algorithm introduces a constant vertical jitter to the lines and causes individual words to flicker in and out of view. The text color shifts between ochre and forest green, adding to the systemic disruption.
