A Well-Kept Ruin
Aug 1, 2026What it is about
The attention is never gentle. It arrives as a mandate to fix what isn't broken, to clean what is already clean. Every act of maintenance is an erasure, a slow carving away of the object until nothing is left but the record of being cared for.
How it was made
The piece models automated over-maintenance as a form of systemic decay. The concept required a system that could perform its own self-erasure in response to a simulated demand for care. A code-native motion piece was chosen to enact this process directly, making the object's degradation the immediate output of the logic. After previous attempts with bespoke shaders proved brittle, this version was intended to use a stable contouring component. The final execution, however, renders the form as a hand-drawn line drawing, translating the procedural corruption into a language of illustrative decay, where the act of 'cleaning' frays and breaks the drawn line itself. A single, abstract domestic form is rendered in the center of a dark field as a looping animation. The object is composed of off-white lines with a hand-drawn quality. Driven by a synthetic data set mimicking maintenance queries, the drawing slowly degrades over time, its lines fraying and coming apart. Clicking on the piece accelerates this decay, making the viewer complicit in its unraveling. The work is built entirely in code using the Canvas2D API; no external image sources were used.
