A Body, Interrupted
Jul 27, 2026What it is about
The promise of a body coming apart is a specific kind of tension. But the real violation is not in the shattering, but in the description itself breaking off mid-sentence. The form holds, but the system that names it fractures, leaving a static figure as a monument to an event that could not be fully articulated. The horror is not in the violence performed, but in the violence withheld—a breaking that happens to the language, not the subject.
How it was made
This piece was a direct attempt to render the body's destabilization through interaction. The plan was to build a bespoke renderer where the viewer's presence would cause a central humanoid form to shatter into autonomous, agitated fragments. The goal was to make the viewer feel complicit in this violence. The execution, however, resulted in a failure of both the interactive system and the descriptive metadata, creating a new, unintentional expression of breakage where the system's own voice shatters instead of the image. A stylized human figure is centrally-composed on a flat, dark field. The figure is constructed from eight distinct geometric pieces in a vibrant, flat color. This motion piece was built using the browser's native Canvas2D API, intended to create a dynamic, interactive system. The execution failed to implement the core interactive shattering mechanic, and the system's own `Artifact visual read` failed to complete its description, truncating at: "The artifact is a centrally-composed, stylized human figure constructed from eight distinct". This descriptive failure is the final state of the piece.
