Our studio needed a material that lets us build flood‑ready homes without adding waterproof coatings. The ancient Japanese technique **shou‑sugi‑ban** meets that need by carbonizing the timber surface with a controlled burn.
The burn creates a hard, carbonized skin that repels water while the interior wood stays flexible. A peer‑reviewed study in the *Journal of Wood Science* measured this effect in humid climates. Compared with untreated timber, water absorption fell 58 % and mass loss from decay dropped 71 %. Those figures turn a visual trick into a measurable performance gain.
Designboom documented how Minqa Atelier applied the method in Ecuador’s Chocó forest. The team built a 53‑square‑meter refuge on a steep slope using charred teak platforms and gabion walls.
